ESG Audit Lineage: Sensor-to-Disclosure Evidence Across a Governed Data Path
A lineage and controls pattern for reducing manual evidence gathering and making ESG metrics traceable from source telemetry to reported disclosures.
Buyer Objection
During a multi-quarter engagement supporting enterprise accounts facing mandatory climate disclosure under AASB S2, Scope 1–3 emissions data lived in spreadsheets across multi-tier supplier networks — with fixed filing deadlines and real litigation exposure. Role: Field CTO & technical GTM lead, light-touch and high-leverage.
Architecture Thesis
Designed to reduce ESG reporting risk by making assumptions, transformations, owners, evidence, and approvals traceable. The filing becomes a query against a governed data path instead of a quarterly archaeology project.
Reference Architecture

The engine ingests enterprise facility energy metrics, direct operational emissions, and upstream/downstream supplier data across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 reporting categories. The underlying architecture utilizes a Medallion Lakehouse design — refining Bronze raw payload data into Silver normalized emission factor datasets and Gold business-ready KPI summaries. Deep integration with enterprise data intelligence and data modeling automates semantic metadata cataloging and maintains end-to-end lineage across the in-scope data path — lineage events are emitted in OpenLineage format and land in the customer's existing metadata catalog, not a proprietary island. Total Scope 3 equivalent carbon emissions are calculated as CO₂e = Σ (activity data × emission factor), summed across all fifteen Scope 3 categories.
Preconditions & Assumptions
- Metric definitions and methodology versions pinned before automation — CO2e = Σ (activity data × emission factor), per reporting category.
- Scope boundaries declared: which Scope 3 categories and facilities are in scope for this reporting cycle.
- Supplier-data attestation process defined, including its known accuracy limits.
Control Model
- Named data ownership and approval workflow for every reported metric.
- Manual adjustments captured in exception logs with approver and rationale — never silent edits.
- Reporting version control and restatement procedures agreed before the first filing.
- Assurance-evidence pack generated from lineage: source telemetry to disclosed figure, with transformations shown.
Validation Plan
- Sampled filing figures traced end-to-end to source telemetry before the first automated filing.
- Exception-log review: every manual adjustment in the cycle accounted for.
- Supplier-data gap analysis: coverage and attestation quality reported alongside the metrics themselves.
Quantified Outcomes & Methodology
All figures are engagement outcomes from the anonymized engagement described above — no external benchmarks cited.
Scope & Methodology
Methodology: preparation-overhead reduction measured as cross-system mapping and calculation hours across the engagement's multi-tier supplier network; lineage coverage scoped to the defined sensor-to-filing data path. Scope: AASB S2 reporting for the in-scope categories. Supplier-provided data carries its source attestation limits.
Risks & Non-Goals
- Supplier data quality bounds reporting accuracy — lineage makes gaps visible, it does not fix the upstream data.
- Lineage supports assurance; it is not itself an assurance opinion, and legal review of disclosures remains required.
- Restatements remain possible; the control model makes them traceable and explainable.
Rollout Approach
- Stage 1: single facility and scope category, traced end-to-end as proof.
- Stage 2: supplier tiers onboarded with attestation workflow.
- Stage 3: assurance dry run with the customer's auditors before the first governed filing cycle.
Executive Takeaway
Most effective when a compliance deadline creates the buying window — audit lineage is both the architecture and the pitch.
